Course Description
This course discusses the main features of the modern languages spoken in Europe. The European continent presents an amazing variety of languages and cultures. Most languages of Europe (Germanic languages such as English; Romance languages such as French and Spanish; Celtic languages such as Irish; Slavic languages such as Russian) belong to the Indo-European language family, which is one of the language families with the largest geographical extension and the most ancient documentation in the world. Additionally, Europe presents languages belonging to different language families: e.g., Hungarian and Finnish, included into the Uralic language family, which extends to Asia. In this course, we will describe the main features of the languages of Europe in their geographical context and historical development. We will discuss similarities and differences in the cultures and societies associated to these languages, which may be useful to understand the main features of Western civilization in general.
